Spot’s Story

Spot was well known in his town in Mississippi. He was left to himself, floated all around the local town, thinking he must be a stray, people called local rescues about him. However, he did have an owner, but wasn’t getting proper care from them. There wasn’t much anyone can do and he continued to wander at large, which can be deadly for a dog. Eventually his “owner” was persuaded to give Spot up to a Local Rescue, run by an amazing woman. Once in her care, she loved him, helped him heal from heartworm, and gave him a safe loving home to stay while he waited for the right family.

While his Southern foster loved Spot, she knew he needed a more permanent place to live out his days. She spoke with a rescue in Massachusetts she works with regularly and they agreed to take him!

I offered to foster him, being a softie for adult dogs in need, however, Spot came with some baggage. He had resource guarding, couldn’t really be touched without flinching, and had some other adjustments to make to a new home. We gave him routine, structure, patience, time, and a lot of love. Today he is thriving!

We decided that we couldn’t let this older gentleman go, and adopted him at the age of 9; he won’t have move ever again. He has helped me foster several dogs, has been a lifesaver to me after losing 3 other dogs in a year to a variety of health issues.

Fostering and adopting Spot Fitzgerald, and fostering 100s of primarily adult dogs, I was inspired to start an official non-profit to help these dogs on my own. The need for dogs just like Spot, is overwhelming. Puppies are amazing, and I have fostered my fair share of them as well, but, there is nothing quite like watching an older dog, that most times, had a hard upbringing, get into the hands of adopters that love them, thrive when given the chance to do so.

I am forever grateful to have him and I want other older dogs to have the same chance. I want them to grow, to love, to learn to be a family dog, and to live their later years the best way that we can provide. Spot will be the face of this mission, and I am so grateful that I can help put this Mission to life.
